US Hospital Bag Checklist

What to actually pack for a US hospital birth — and what to leave on the shelf

This guide is written for US hospital births and links US (amazon.com) products. In the UK? The Resources page has UK-specific picks — set your region with the US/UK toggle there.

What the hospital usually provides — check before you buy

Most US hospitals stock the basics for your stay, and buying duplicates is the most common hospital-bag waste. Supplies vary by facility, so call yours and ask before buying any of these:

Mesh underwear and maternity pads

Ice packs and a basic peri bottle

Diapers, wipes and receiving blankets for baby

Formula and bottles if you need them

A hospital gown (yours is a comfort upgrade, not a need)

Documents and logistics

Photo ID and insurance card

Birth preferences, printed — one page is plenty

Plan the trip home: a correctly fitted rear-facing car seat if traveling by car. Confirm your hospital's discharge requirements.

Find a car-seat inspection station via NHTSA, and read ACOG's guide to knowing when labor begins for when to head in.

For you (labor and the stay)

Robe or gown that opens in front for skin-to-skin and feeds

Grippy socks or slippers

Lip balm and hair ties

One-handed water bottle you can sip from bed

Phone with a long charging cable

Loose, maternity-sized going-home clothes

For baby

Going-home outfit in two sizes (newborn and 0–3 months)

Check which baby supplies your hospital provides and pack any extras it requests

For your support person

Snacks and water — hospital cafeterias close

Phone charger and a change of clothes

A pillow from home (bring a non-white pillowcase)

Save money: what not to buy

Don't buy a breast pump retail before checking your insurance. Under the ACA, most health plans must cover breastfeeding support and equipment — but what exactly (manual or electric, rental or new) varies by plan, and some older grandfathered plans are exempt. HealthCare.gov explains the coverage — ask your plan first.

Use what the hospital gives you before buying your own version

Skip pre-packed “everything” bags beyond one kit you'll actually use

Skip supplements and anything that promises to start labor
