Comfort supplies for the first weeks after birth — and the warning signs that matter
This guide is written for US hospital births and links US (amazon.com) products. In the UK? The Resources page has UK-specific picks — set your region with the US/UK toggle there.
After a vaginal birth, expect perineal soreness (especially with stitches), cramping as the uterus shrinks, and bleeding that tapers over weeks. After a cesarean birth, you're healing from abdominal surgery: a sore incision, a longer list of activity restrictions, and a different supply list — fewer perineal products, more incision care.
ACOG treats recovery as an ongoing process, not a single six-week checkup: contact with your provider within 3 weeks of birth, and a comprehensive visit by 12 weeks. Pack recovery supplies before labor — sorting this from a hospital bed is miserable.
URGENT MATERNAL WARNING SIGNS — UP TO A YEAR AFTER BIRTH
Some complications appear days, weeks, or even up to a year after delivery. Call 911 right away for life-threatening symptoms: chest pain, trouble breathing, seizures, severe pain in your lower abdomen, or thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby.
Get medical care immediately for bleeding that soaks through one or more pads in an hour, clots larger than an egg, fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, a headache that won't ease with medicine or comes with vision changes, painful swelling or tenderness in your legs, red streaks or painful new lumps in your breasts, or incision pain, redness or discharge that gets worse.
Full list: CDC Hear Her — urgent maternal warning signs and ACOG's postpartum pain guide. For postpartum depression or anxiety, the Postpartum Support International HelpLine is 1-800-944-4773 (English/Spanish); in a crisis, call or text 988.
Angled peri bottle — the hospital's basic one works, angled is easier
Instant ice maxi pads for the first days home
Witch hazel or cooling perineal spray
Stool softener — ask your clinician before taking anything
Sore nipples are common in the first weeks; hydrogel pads soothe between feeds. Persistent or worsening nipple pain deserves assessment: latch is one possible cause. Contact a lactation professional or clinician rather than buying more products.
Keep the incision clean and dry, watch for the infection signs listed above, and don't put anything on the incision without your clinician's sign-off. Stock up differently: fewer perineal products, more high-waisted soft clothing that clears the incision.
Everything below is comfort care, not medical treatment — bring symptoms to your clinician rather than self-treating them.
